Ferrari F333SP – Sold!

My car is a 1995 Ferrari 333 SP Evoluzione s/n 011, a “Ferrari-built” MOMO-LANDSHARK-LISTA team car driven by GianPiero Moretti, Wayne Taylor, Didier Theys, Gerry Jackson and ‘Mad Max’ Papis.

333 SP s/n 011 has twenty well-documented races in the 1995-1996 IMSA Series with sixteen top five finishes.

Perhaps the ONLY well-raced 333 SP never hit hard and still with its original tub!
This stunning racer has been carefully maintained through a decade of dealer and museum storage.

“Unveiled at the end of 1993, the 333 SP transformed racing in the bleak years following the demise of IMSA GTP series, established the standard for open top prototypes while ushering in Ferrari’s official return to Sports Prototype racing after a 20 year absence. The 333 SP debuted in the third round of the 1994 IMSA GT Championship at Road Atlanta, finishing first and second. In the first year of racing four 333 SPs were campaigned by three teams: Euromotorsport, Momo Sports, and Team Scandia. In the next race, at Lime Rock, the 333 SPs monopolized the podium, and would take three more wins by the end of the season. In 1995 the 333 SP won the 12 Hours of Sebring and four other races, winning the Sports Prototype Championship while Fermin Velez won the drivers title. The 333 SP remained competitive, winning the FIA Sportscar Championship as late as 1999 with Collard and Sospiri and again in 2000 with Christian Pescatori and David Terrien for the JMB Racing-entered Ferrari.”

The first twelve 333 SPs were actively raced and were built by Ferrari with the tubs by Dallara. These first series cars were sold and supported through Ferrari. S/n 013 was not built and from s/n 014 through 041 all 333 SPs were built, delivered, and supported by Michelotto. S/N 011. Sold new to Gianpiero Moretti’s MomoCorse for the 1995 IMSA season (to replace 004). Leased to Moretti by FNA. Driven by Wayne Taylor in the 1995 season.
Re-leased by Moretti to Tim Hubman. Moretti got a deposit and was supposed to get about $2,300,000.00 for the year and for the car! Moretti bought about $900,000 worth of spares for the season, but… the money never came from Hubman!
1995, 04–05 Feb., Daytona International Speedway, #30. Driven by Moretti, Eliseo Salazar, Wayne Taylor, and Didier Theys. DNFed with compression problems after leading the race.
1995, 18 Mar., Sebring, #30. Moretti, Taylor and Theys finished tenth.
1995, 03 Apr., Road Atlanta, #30. Driven by the regular pairing of Moretti and Taylor to third place.
1995, 21 May, Canadian Air Force Base, Nova Scotia, #30. Another third place for Moretti and Taylor.

As per Gerry, yes it is for sale. Wants to do a lease back for the next (1997) season. The last race of the season is the weekend of Oct. 5/6 at Daytona, a 3 hour race. Then actively for sale. Now in litigation. Motetti refuses to release the car to Jackson.
1997, 21 Apr., back in Court, the Judge will probably allow Gerry to move the 333SP to Dean Butler’s garage. He is the founder of Lens Crafters! Still cannot sell the car!
1997, 11 May, the car has been moved to Dean Butler’s garage. For sale!
1997, 14 July, Gerry called. He now owns the car. An agreement was reached in the judge’s chambers and then read into the court records. The car will have a 24 hour motor with about 5 hours used up, so… good for a lifetime for club racing. Has 1996 bodywork. No spares.

History Of Cars As A Group

The Ferrari 333 SP was a sports prototype car built by Michelotto to World Sports Car regulations for Ferrari. Unveiled at the end of 1993, at the behest of amateur racer Giampiero Moretti (owner of the MOMO auto parts business), the 333 SP marked Ferrari’s official return to sports car racing after a 20 year absence. The car was built to compete in the IMSA’s new WSC class, which replaced the previous GTP cars.

While the 333 SP was on its planning stages, Ferrari contracted Italian motor racing chassis manufacturer Dallara to develop the chassis and tub, leaving the maker to concentrate on the engine, a version of the V12 power plant used in the 1992 Ferrari F92A Formula One car, enlarged to 4.0 L, with power around 600 bhp (around 450 kW).

The car debuted in the third round of the 1994 IMSA GT Championship at Road Atlanta, securing the first two places. Four cars were allocated to three teams, Euromotorsport, Momo Corse, and Team Scandia. In the following round, at Lime Rock, the Italian cars monopolized the podium, and would take three more wins until the end of the season. However, due to Ferrari starting the season late, they were beaten by Oldsmobile to the makes’ championship, and Andy Evans was the best placed Ferrari driver at fifth in the drivers’ championship.

In 1995, the 333 SP took its revenge. Although proving unreliable at the 24 Hours of Daytona, it took top honors at the 12 Hours of Sebring before securing another four wins. With the four cars taking more consistent results, Ferrari won the makes championship and Fermín Velez won the drivers title, with Mauro Baldi and Wayne Taylor taking third and fourth, respectively. The car also made its debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, but was never competitive in the French race, its best result a 6th spot in 1997.

The following year the car was still competitive and tied with Oldsmobile in the constructors championship but lost on a tie-breaker, as well as allowing ex-F1 driver Max Papis to score a final second place and Didier Theys a fourth in the drivers championship, even though the 333 SP won only two races. In 1997, the Ferrari won again at Sebring and took another four wins. However, the car was losing its competitiveness against the more modern Riley & Scott, and taking 4th, 5th and 6th in the drivers championship and second in the makes was the best it could with a four year old design.

In 1998, the car was slightly updated, and found new life in the International Sports Racing Series (later called FIA Sportscar Championship), winning every race and scoring the championship’s two top spots with the winners Emmanuel Collard and Vincenzo Sospiri and runners-up Didier Theys and Fredy Lienhard. In America, the car won three rounds in the IMSA Championship (including Sebring) and took Wayne Taylor to second in the final standings while Ferrari won the makes championship. In the rivalUSRRC Can-Am championship, the 333 SP finally managed to take the Daytona 24 Hours crown.

Starting from 1999, the car found its niche in the European races, as the newly introduced American Le Mans Series saw factory-backed Audi and BMW entries dominating against privateer Ferraris. The cars were consistently outclassed in the ALMS races, and in 2000 Doran Racing even fit a Judd engine in an attempt to stay competitive. However, across the Atlantic, the 333 SP was the car to own, and in 1999, Collard and Sospiri renewed their ISRS title, edging out Christian Pescatori, who won the following year, with David Terrien, making it three championships in a row for the JMB Racing-entered Ferrari.

As the 333 SP became outdated in chassis, engine and aerodynamics, it gradually disappeared from international sports car racing. In 2001, no Ferrari prototype raced in the ALMS, although the Risi Competizione car made a few appearances in Grand-Am, while in Europe, Marco Zadra won the FIA Sportscar Championship but the car was not as dominant as it had once been. In 2002, the 333 SP was absent from the championship, but made a few appearances the following year, powered by a Judd engine, at the hands of Giovanni Lavaggi’s GLV-Brums team. The 333 SP’s final appearance was at the2003 500km of Monza.
